About the Agency!
The Agency was born within a program carried out by the Amazon Entrepreneurship Center in direct partnership with Hydro, City Hall and several other institutions in the municipality of Barcarena. A program whose aim was to create sustainable businesses within the Amazon. Thus was born the Mortiguras Turismo Agency. At first we had only one route, which was very successful and today we already have more than 10 municipal, state and interstate routes.
The Agency was born from a visible problem in our city, local tourism, which was barely exploitable and had incredible potential. With this in mind and with all our supporters, we have been advancing until we reach the stage where we are today, and this is just the beginning of a great Success Story in Amazonian Tourism, Regional Tourism and Inbound Tourism, which has grown a lot in recent years due to the pandemic. Tourists are looking for closer options and not to mention that the Amazon is currently on the rise, so we have two strands within our agency: experiential tourism, which is developed in the Amazon, and traditional tourism, through road, air and river excursions.

Discovering the origins of the name Mortiguras
The rescue of the history and culture of our city was essential for us to be able to choose the name for our agency. Today, wherever we go, we take a little bit of Barcarena, showing and highlighting that our city has many historical and cultural riches and exuberant natural beauty.
On the southern shore of Marajó Bay, an area was transformed into a Jesuit Mission, administered by missionaries of the Society of Jesus. In 1661, Fathers Francisco da Veiga and Bettendorf established a literacy school in the village of Mortiguras.
In 1720, the church of Vila do Conde was built (currently known as the church of São João Batista), replacing the old thatched church. It is the only remaining church from the Jesuit times of the 18th century in the municipality, having been preserved almost completely original.
In 1709, the Jesuit Mission of Gibirié (formerly Barcarena, currently known as the Village of São Francisco) was founded on the northern bank of the Gibirié or Murucuçá River. The village was probably already inhabited by the Tupinambá and Gibirié indigenous people, and there are also mentions of the Popiquara and Aruã indigenous people.
